Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ572

Sarin’s parents spent $802 altogether in the Kluang mall.  1/4 of the amount of his father’s spending was $41 more than 1/7 of the amount of his mother’s spending. How much more did his mother spend than his father?

Solution:

The math model,

upq572-1

            Per the model,

            11 units = 802 – 4 × 41 = 638

            1 unit = $58

            His mother spend more than his father = 3 × 58 – 4 × 41 = $10

Alternative solution 1:

            Father’s total spending ==> 4F

            Mother’s total spending ==> 7M

            4F + 7M ==> $802

            1/4 of Father’s spending ==> 1F

            1/7  of Mother’s spending ==> 1M

            1F ==>1M + $41

            4F ==> 4M + $164

            4M + 7M ==> $802 – $164

            11M ==> $638

            1M = $58

            1F = 58 + 41 = $99

            Father‘s total spending =  × 99 = $396

            Mother’s total spending = 7 × 58 = $406

            His mother spend more than his father = 406 – 396 = $10

Alternative solution 2 :

            If 1/7 of mother spending = 1U

            Then 1/4 of father spending = 1U + 41

            Total spending of father = 4U + 164

            Total spending of mother = 7U

            Their total spending = $802

             4U + 7U = 802 – 164

             11U = 638

             1U = 58

             Mother total spending = 7 × 58 = $406

            Father total spending = 4 × 58 + 164 = $396

            His mother spend more than his father = 406 – 396 = $10
