Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ572

Sarin’s parents spent \$802 altogether in the Kluang mall.  1/4 of the amount of his father’s spending was \$41 more than 1/7 of the amount of his mother’s spending. How much more did his mother spend than his father?

Solution:

The math model,

Per the model,

11 units = 802 – 4 × 41 = 638

1 unit = \$58

His mother spend more than his father = 3 × 58 – 4 × 41 = \$10

Alternative solution 1:

Father’s total spending ==> 4F

Mother’s total spending ==> 7M

4F + 7M ==> \$802

1/4 of Father’s spending ==> 1F

1/7  of Mother’s spending ==> 1M

1F ==>1M + \$41

4F ==> 4M + \$164

4M + 7M ==> \$802 – \$164

11M ==> \$638

1M = \$58

1F = 58 + 41 = \$99

Father‘s total spending =  × 99 = \$396

Mother’s total spending = 7 × 58 = \$406

His mother spend more than his father = 406 – 396 = \$10

Alternative solution 2 :

If 1/7 of mother spending = 1U

Then 1/4 of father spending = 1U + 41

Total spending of father = 4U + 164

Total spending of mother = 7U

Their total spending = \$802

4U + 7U = 802 – 164

11U = 638

1U = 58

Mother total spending = 7 × 58 = \$406

Father total spending = 4 × 58 + 164 = \$396

His mother spend more than his father = 406 – 396 = \$10
