Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ555

There were groups of friends and relatives visiting Sarin’s family during the day of Hari Raya.

The ratio of the number of friends and relatives visited them in the morning to that of in the afternoon is 2 : 3.

The number of friends and relatives visited them in the evening is twice that of the morning and there are 20 more friends visited them in the evening than in the afternoon.

How many friends and relatives are there in evening?

Solution:

            Based on ratio

            Visitors in morning : Visitors in afternoon = 2 : 3

            Visitors in evening : Visitors in morning = 2 : 1 = 4 : 2

            Visitors in evening : Visitors in morning : Visitors in afternoon = 4 : 2 : 3

The difference between visitors in evening and visitors in afternoon = 20

            1 unit = 20

The number of friends and relatives visited them in the evening = 4 × 20 = 80

Alternative solution:

            Express using model,

UPQ555-1

            Based on the model,

            1 unit = 20 visitors

            The number of visitors in the evening = 4× 20 = 80
