Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ554

In the Esplanade Library, there is an equal number of visitors on Monday and Tuesday. The ratio of the number of adult visitors to the number of children visitors on Monday is 2 : 1. The ratio of number of adult visitors to the number of children visitors in Tuseday is 4 : 11. What fraction of the visitors in the 2 days are adults?

Solution:

Ratio on Monday,

Adults visitors : Children visitors : Total on Monday = 2 : 1 : 3

Ratio on Tuseday,

Adults visitors : Children visitors : Total on Monday = 4 : 11 : 15

Since the total number of visitors are the same,

Ratio on Monday,

Adults visitors : Children visitors : Total on Monday = 2 : 1 : 3 = 10 : 5 : 15

The ratio of the visitors are adults in the two days,

Fraction of visitors in the two days are adults = 14/30 = 7/15

Alternative solution(1):

Using fraction,

Fraction of visitors in the two days are adults = 14/30 = 7/15

Alternative solution(2):

Using model:

Since both days have same number of visitors, same number of units

The fraction of adults visitors in the two days = 14/30 = 7/15
