Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ544

Fatimah and Hairu had a Congkak game. In the beginning of the game, Fatimah had a bag of beads. She lost 2/9 of the beads to Hairu in the first match and 1/5 of the remaining beads to Hairu in the second match. She won 85 beads in the final match and then she had as many beads as she had at first.

How many beads did Fatimah have in the bag at first?

 Solution:

UPQ544-1

After Fatimah won 85 beads in the final match, the number of beads she had is same as the number of beads she had at first.

The number of beads lost in the game = 85

Fraction of beads lost in 2nd match reference to total beads = 7/9 × 1/5 = 7/45

Fraction of total number of beads lost = 2/9 + 7/45 = 17/45

17/45 fraction of total beads è 85

1/45 fraction of total beads è 5

Total number of beads Fatimah have at first = 45 × 5 = 225
