Lower primary school mathematics question LPQ101

Sarin had 180 more stickers than Hairu. Fatimah had half as much stickers as Sarin. If the 3 children had 870 stickers altogether, how many stickers did Hairu have?

 Solution:

Draw the model

LPQ101-1

Per the model,

5 Units = 870 + 180 = 1050

1 unit = 210

The number of stickers that Hairu have = 2 × 210 – 180 = 240

Alternative solution:

Draw the model,

 

LPQ101-2

Per the model,

5 units = 870 – 4 × 180 = 150

1 unit = 30

The number of stickers that Hairu have = 2 × 30 + 180 = 240
