**Lower primary school mathematics question LPQ98**

Hairu had 28 more stickers than Sarin. After Hairu gave away 5 stickers, he had twice as many beads as Sarin. How many stickers did Hairu have at first?

Solution:

Given Hairu had twice as many stickers as Sarin finally, we can build the model for “at first” as below shown.

Per the model,

1U = 28 – 5 = 23

The number of stickers Hairu had at first = 2 × 23 + 5 = 51

Alternative Solution:

The number of stickers that Sarin had no change ==> 1U

The number of stickers that Hairu had at first ==> 1U + 28

After,

Hairu given away 5 stickers and he had twice as many of stickers as Sarin

The number of stickers Hairu had finally ==> 2U = 1U + 28 – 5 = 1U + 23

Since no change for Sarin

1U ==> 23 stickers

Hence,

The number of stickers Hairu had at first = 23 + 28 = 51
