Lower primary school mathematics question LPQ96

After a round of Congkak game, Fatimah had collected some marbles. 1/3 of them were gold, 1/10 of them were purple and the rest were pink. There were 42 less purple than pink stars. How many marbles she has in all?

* *Solution:

Using model,

Subdivided one whole to 30 units (parts)

Per the model,

14 units = 42

1 unit = 3

The total number of marbles Fatimah has = 3 × 30 = 90

Alternative solution (1):

The fraction of gold marbles ==>1/3 = 10/30

The fraction of purple marbles ==> 1/10 = 3/30

The faction of gold and purple marbles = 10/30 + 3/30 = 13/30

The fraction of pink marbles = 1 – 13/30 = 17/30

The fraction of pink marbles more than purple marbles = 17/30 – 3/30 = 14/30 = 7/15

Given 42 less purple marbles than pink marbles,

The total number of marbles = 42 × 15/7 = 90

Alternative solution (2):

Form a fraction table as shown:

Total Gold Purple Pink Purple and Pink difference

1 1/3 1/10 NG

30/30 10/30 3/30 17/30 17/30 – 3/30 = 14/30

There are 42 less purple marbles than pink marbles

14 units = 42

1 unit = 3

The total number of marbles = 3 × 30 = 90
