Lower primary school mathematics question LPQ95

Sarin and his family attended a concert performed by Star Choir group in the concert hall of The Esplanade. The Star Choir group was made up of 84 singers. 1/3 of them were adults. There were 18 more boys than girls.

  1. How many adults were there in the choir?
  2. What fractions of the choir are boys and what fractions are girls?

 Solution:

Fraction of adult singers ==> 1/3

Fraction of children singers ==> 2/3

The total number of singers = 84

3 units = 84

1 unit = 28

The number of adult singers = 28

The number of children singers = 2 × 28 = 56

There were 18 more boys than girls in the choir,

56 – 18 = 38

38 ÷ 2 = 19

The number of girl singers = 19

The number of boy singers = 19 + 18 = 37

Fraction of choir are boys = 37/84

Fraction of choir are girls = 19/84

Alternative Solution:

Using model,

LPQ95-1

Per the model,

3 units = 84

1 unit = 84 ÷ 3 = 28

The number of adult singers = 28

The number of children singers = 2 × 28 = 56

Among the children singers, there are 18 more boys than girls,

LPQ95-2

Per the model,

2 units = 56 – 18 = 38

1 unit = 19

The number of girls = 19

The number of boys = 19 + 18 = 37

The fraction of choir are boys = 37/84

The fraction of choir are girls = 19/84
