Sarin and Fatimah have a sum of money each in their coin bank. When Sarin gives $126 to Fatimah, he has 3 times as much money as Fatimah. When Sarin gives another $46 to Fatimah, he has $266 more than Fatimah. How much money does Fatimah have at first?

Solution:

Start the math model with Sarin has 3 times more money than Fatimah, then add in the amount that Sarin gives to Fatimah. ($126 and then $46)

2 units = 266 + 46 + 46 = 358

1 unit = $179

The amount Fatimah has at first = 179 – 126 = $53
