**Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ502**

Sarin and Fatimah went shopping together in Kluang Mall. They had a total sum of $144 for shopping. The ratio of the amount Sarin spent to the amount Fatimah spent is 4 : 3. The amount that Fatimah had left was $9 more than what she had spent. She had thrice as much money left as Sarin.

(a) How much money did Fatimah spend?

(b) How much money did Sarin have at first?

Solution:

Draw the model for total sum

Per the model

11 units = 144 – 12 = 132

1 unit = 12

The amount of money Fatimah spent = 3 × 12 = $36

The amount of money Sarin had at first = 5 × 12 + 3 = $63
