Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ498

Hairu has a fraction in his mind. The denominator of this fraction is 6 more than its numerator. When Hairu add 4 to both the numerator and denominator, the fraction becomes 3/5.

What is the fraction that Hairu is thinking of?

Per the model,

2 units = 6

1 unit = 3

The denominator = 3 × 3 – 4 = 5

The numerator = 5 × 3 – 4 = 11

The fraction = 5/11

Alternative solution:

The fraction of 3/5 = 6/10 = 9/15

9 – 4 = 5, 15 – 4 = 11

11 – 5 = 6

The fraction = 5/11
