Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ482

In the Esplanade concert hall, there were 4/5 as many boys as girls and 2/3 as many adults as children. There were 120 more adults than boys.

(a)        How many people were there in the Esplande concert hall?

(b)        What fraction of the people in the Esplande concert hall were children?

Solution:

Draw the math model

Per the model,

2 units = 120

1 unit = 60

The number of people in the Esplande concert Hall = 15 × 60 = 900

The fraction of the people in the Esplande concert hall were children = 9/15 = 3/5

Alternative Solution:

There were 4/5 as many boys than girls in the Esplande concert Hall

The ratio,

Boys : Girls : Children = 4 : 5 : 9

There were 2/3 as many adults than children in the Esplande concert hall

The ratio,

Adults : Children : All = 2 : 3 : 5 = 6 : 9 : 15

Adults : Boys : Girls : Children : All = 6 : 4 : 5 : 9 : 15

2 units = 120

1 unit = 60

The number of people in the Esplande hall concert = 15 × 60 = 900

The fraction of the people were children in the Esplande concert hall = 9/15 = 3/5
