**Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ474**

Fatimah and Hairu went shopping in Kluang Mall. Hairu had $185 more than Fatiimah. After Fatimah spent 40% of her money and Hairu spent 70% of his money, they had the same amount of money left.

(a) How much money had Fatiimah left?

(b) What was the total amount of money they spent?

Solution:

From the question

Both of them left with same amount after spending

60% of Fatimah’s money is equal to 30% of Hairu’s money

Draw the math model

From the model

10 units = 185

1 unit = 18.5

The amount of money that Fatimah left with = 6 × 18.5 = $111

The total amount spent by both of them = 18 × 18.5 = $333

Alternative Solution:

60% of Fatimah’s money is equal to 30% of Hairu’s money

Fraction of 6/10 = 3/5 of Fatimah money ==> Fraction of 3/10 of Hairu’s money

The different amount of between Fatimah and Hairu ==> 10 – 5 = 5 units

5 units = $185

1 unit = $37

The amount of money that Fatimah left with = 3 × 37 = $111

The total amount spent by both of them = (2 + 7) × 37 = $333
