Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ463

Sarin, Hairu and Fatimah visited a bicycle shop and they decided to buy a bicycle for their father. They shared the cost equally among themselves. Fatimah did not bring her money, so Sarin and Hairu paid for the bicycle first. Sarin paid 0.25 more than what Hairu had paid. Fatimah then paid her share to both Sarin and Hairu when they got home.

(a) Fatimah paid Hairu $6.55. How much did Fatimah need to pay Sarin?

(b) During the great Singapore Sale, the same bicycle was given a discount of 20% of the price that Sarin, Hairu and Fatimah paid for. How much did they pay if they bought the bicycle during the sale?

Solution:

Sarin and Hairu paid for Fatimah at first

Sarin paid 0.25 = 1/4 more than Hairu,

Draw a math model as below,

UPQ463-1

            From the model

The amount they paid = 9 units

Sarin, Hairu and Fatimah share the cost equally, so each bared 1/3 of the cost.

Each of them will pay 3 units.

            Since Fatimah paid Hairu $6.55

            1 unit = $6.55

            Fatimah need to pay Sarin = 2 units = 6.55 × 2 = $13.10

            The cost of the bicycle paid by them = 9 units = 6.55 × 9 = $58.95

The shop given 20% discount during the Great Singapore Sale,

The cost of the bicycle during the great Singapore Sale = 58.95 × 0.8 = $47.16
