Hairu had 140 stickers more than Fatimah. If Hairu gave Fatimah 20 stickers, he would have three times as many stickers as Fatimah. How many stickers did Hairu have at first?

 Solution:

            Draw the model

            Hairu given 20 stickers and he has 3 time as many stickers as Fatimah

UPQ447-1            Per the model

                        2 units = 140 – 20 – 20 = 100

                        1 unit = 50 stickers

                        The number of stickers that Hairu has at first = 3 × 50 + 20 = 170
