Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ446

Sarin, Hairu and Fatimah had spent an amount of money during the Great Singapore Sale. Sarin and Hairu spent \$46 altogether. Sarin and Fatimah spent \$54 altogether. Fatimah and Hairu spent \$68 altogether. What was the ratio of Hairu’s spending to the total sum of money they spend?

Solution:

Work out the model base on their combination of spending

Hairu’s money = 60 ÷ 2 = \$30

Sarin’s money = 46 – 30 = \$16

Fatimah’s money = 68 – 30 = \$38

Total spending = 30 + 16 + 38 = \$84

The Ratio, Hairu’s spending to total spending = 30 : 84 = 5 : 14
