Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ430

Hairu had some stickers. He gave 18 stickers to Fatimah and 5/7 of the stickers to Sarin. Then, he used 3/4 of the remainder for his project and had 35 stickers left. How many stickers did he have at first?

 Solution:

            Draw the stickers’ flow diagram

UPQ430-1

            From the stickers flow

The 1/4 fraction of the remainder is 35 stickers

UPQ430-2

            1 unit = 35

            The reminder stickers = 4 × 35 = 140

            The 2/7 fraction of Hairu stickers = 140 + 18 = 158 stickers

UPQ430-3

            2 units = 158

            1 unit = 79 stickers

            The number of stickers Hairu has at first = 7 × 79 = 553
