**Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ410**

Sarin and Hairu had a total of 1044 stickers. Sarin had 8 times as many stickers as Hairu. How many stickers should Sarin give Hairu so that Hairu will have 2 times as many stickers as Sarin?

Solution:

The model

Total number of units = 1 + 8 = 9 units

The total number of stickers = 1044

9 units = 1044

1 unit = 116

The number of stickers from Sarin to Hairu = 5 × 116 = 580

Alternative solution:

Solve using ratio

The initial ratio

Sarin : Hairu : Sarin + Hairu = 8 : 1 : 9

The total number of stickers no change

Final ratio after transfer

Sarin : Hairu : Sarin + Hairu = 1 : 2 : 3 = 3 : 6 : 9

9 units = 1044

1 unit = 116

The number of units transfer from Sarin to Hairu = 8 – 3 = 5

The number of stickers transfer from Sarin to Hairu = 5 × 116 = 580
