Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ402

Fatimah’s mass was 1/4 of Hairu’s mass. Hairu’s mass was 4/5 of Sarin’s mass. What was the ratio of Fatimah’s mass to Sarin’s mass to the total mass of three of them?

 Solution:

            Visualise from the Math Model

UPQ402-1

            Fatimah’s mass in unit = 1

            Sarin’s mass in unit = 5

            Total mass in unit = 1 + 4 + 5 = 10

The ratio of Fatimah’s mass to Sarin’s mass to the total mass of three of them = 1 : 5 : 10

Alternative Solution:

Fatimah’s mass was 1/4 fraction of Hairu’s mass

            In ratio

            Fatimah’s mass : Hairu’s mass = 1 : 4

Hairu’s mass was 4/5 fraction of Sarin’s mass

            In ratio

            Hairu’s mass : Sarin’s mass = 4 : 5

            Fatimah’s mass : Hairu’s mass : Sarin’s mass = 1 : 4 : 5

            Fatimah’s mass : Sarin’s mass : Total mass = 1 : 5 : 10
