Hairu took out (20y + 2) pieces of Kueh Lapis from the kitchen to serve their relatives during Hari Raya Puasa open house. He gave 4 pieces of Kueh Lapis to each of their relatives and had 4y pieces of Kueh Lapis left. How many relatives visited them at open house?

Solution:

He left with 4y pieces of Kueh Lapis

The number of Kueh Lapis given to relatives = 20y + 2 – 4y = 16y + 2

Each relative had 4 pieces of Kueh Lapis

The number of relatives = (16y + 2)/4 = (4y + ½)
