Sarin’s father drove from Simei Town to JB Town. After completing 2/7 of the journey in 1/2 hour, he passed a van travelling at a constant speed of 70 km/h in the same direction. 3 hours later, Sarin’s father reached JB Town but the van was still 65km away from JB Town.
(a) Find the average speed of Sarin’s father.
(b) If the van left Simei Town at 08 10, at what time would it arrive at JB Town?
In 3 hours, the van will cover a distance = 70 × 3 = 210 km
The distance from the car passes the van to JB town = 210 + 65 = 275km
The van is 2/7 fraction of the distance from Simei Town
5 units = 275km
1 unit = 55km
7 units = 385km
The distance from Simei Town to JB Town = 385km
The time for Sarin’s father to cover the distance = 3 + 0.5 = 3.5h
The average speed of Sarin’s father = 385 ÷ 3.5 = 110 km/h
Time needed for van to cover from Simei Town to JB Town = 385 ÷ 70 = 5.5h
The van reached JB Town at 13 40hrs
