In the figure below, not drawn to scale, ABCD is a square. CDE is an equilateral triangle. Find ∠y.

Solution:

CDE is an equilateral triangle

∠ EDC = ∠ DCE = ∠ CED = 600

ABCD is a square

DA = DE

∠ DAE = ∠ DEA

AECD formed a 4-sided polygon

∠ DEA = (3600 – 900 – 600 – 600) ÷ 2 = 750

∠ y = 3600 – 750 – 600 = 2250
