Hairu has more stickers than Fatimah. The ratio of the total number of stickers both have to the difference between the number of stickers each of them have is 13 : 3.

(a) Express the number of stickers Hairu has as a fraction of the number of stickers Fatimah has.

(b) Express the fraction of stickers that Fatimah has.

Solution:

Base on the given ratio information of 13: 3

Total number of stickers both have in term of units = 13 units

The different in stickers among them in term of units = 3 units

13 – 3 = 10 units of stickers to share among both of them equally

Draw the math model,

Based on the above model,

Fraction of the number of stickers Hairu had to the number of stickers Fatimah had = 8/5

Fraction of stickers that Fatimah had = 5/13

Alternative solution:

Using simple equations

Set: The number of stickers Hairu had in units = H

The number of stickers Fatimah had in units = F

H + F = 13

H – F = 3

2H = 13 + 3 = 16

H = 8 units

F = 13 – 8 = 5 units

Fraction of the number of stickers Hairu had to the number of stickers Fatimah had = 8/5

Fraction of stickers that Fatimah had = 5/13
