During Sarin’s family open house for relatives and friends, there were thrice as many relatives as friends at their house. After 72 relatives left their house, the number of friends was 2/3 the number of relatives. What is the total number of relatives and friends who remained at their house?

Solution:

All their friends remained in their house and 75 relatives left

The final number of friends at their house was 2/3 of the number of relatives

3 units = 72

1 unit = 24

The total number of boys and girls who remained at the camp = 5 × 24 = 120

Alternative solution:

Initial Ratio, Relatives : Friends : (Relatives + Friends) = 3 : 1 : 4 = 6 : 2 : 8

Final Ratio, Relatives : Friends : (Relatives + Friends) = 3 : 2 : 5

The changes was due to 72 relatives left their house and no change of friends

Therefore, 3 units = 72
