Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ229

Fatimah and mother are cleaning up their room during Ramadan. Fatimah can clean 1/6 of a room in 2 hours. Her mother can clean 1/3 of the same room in 1/2 an hour. If the two of them work together, how long will they take to clean the room?

Solution:

Fatimah and mother clean the room together

The speed of work done will base on the combine work speed of the two.

The speed of work for Fatimah = 1/6 ÷ 2 = 1/12 room per hour

The speed of work for her mother = 1/3 ÷ ½ = 2/3 room per hour

                        The combine speed of work = 1/12 + 2/3 = 9/12 = ¾ room per hour

They need 1 1/3 h to clean up the room
