Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ211

Sarin and Fatimah spent some money in Kluang Mall. They had a total of $204 for shopping. Sarin had $12 more than Fatimah. Fatimah spent 4 times as much money as Sarin and was left with half the amount of money that Sarin had left.

(a) How much money did Sarin bring along for shopping?

(b) How much money had Sarin left after shopping?

Solution:

Draw the Math Model base on the total amount of money they had.

The amount that Fatimah had left was equal to half of what Sarin had left

The spending was 4 times for Fatimah and 1 time for Sarin

The model

Yellow block : Left with;       Blue block : Spent

From the model

1 unit (Blue block) = $12

The money that Sarin had before spending = 9 × 12 = $108

The money that Sarin left with after spending = 8 × 12 = $96
