Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ198

Sarin’s father gave half of his salary and \$80 to Sarin’s mother as family spending. Then he spent half of his remaining salary and \$70 on rent. How much was his salary if he had \$360 left?

Solution:

Draw the math model on Sarin’s father salary

Per the model

1 units = 360 + 70 + 40 = 470

Sarin’s father salary = 4 × 470 = \$1880

Alternative solution:

½ of remainder = 360 + 70 = \$ 430

Remainder = 2 × 430 = \$ 860

½ of salary = 860 + 80 = \$940

Sarin’s father salary = 2 × 940 = \$1880
