Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ198

Sarin’s father gave half of his salary and $80 to Sarin’s mother as family spending. Then he spent half of his remaining salary and $70 on rent. How much was his salary if he had $360 left?

             Draw the math model on Sarin’s father salary

            Per the model

            1 units = 360 + 70 + 40 = 470

            Sarin’s father salary = 4 × 470 = $1880

Alternative solution:

                                    ½ of remainder = 360 + 70 = $ 430

                                    Remainder = 2 × 430 = $ 860

                                    ½ of salary = 860 + 80 = $940

                                    Sarin’s father salary = 2 × 940 = $1880
