Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ197

The train KTM15 travelled at a uniform speed from Singapore Woodlands Station to Malaysia Kluang Station. It passed the return train KTM81 which was travelling at a uniform speed of 80 km/h in the opposite direction. 4 hours after they had passed each other, the train KTM15 reached Malaysia Kluang Station and the train KTM81 was 30 km away from Singapore Woodlands Station. If the train KTM15 took 9 hours to travel from Singapore Woodlands Station to Malaysia Kluang Station Town, find the distance between the two stations.

Solution:

After the trains met,

KTM81 travelled 4 hours more and 30km away from Woodlands Station

KTM81 travelled 80 × 4 = 320km in the 4 hours

The distance from meet up point to Woodlands Station = 320 + 30 = 350 km

KTM15 needed 9 hours to travel from Woodlands Station to Kluang Station

KTM15 travelled 9 – 4 = 5 hours before met KTM81

The speed of KTM15 = 350 ÷ 5 = 70 km/h

The distance between the two stations = 70 × 9 = 630 km
