Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ137

The Esplanade Library had 700 members last year. This year, the number of male members has been reduced by half and the number of female members has been reduced by 0.25. As a result, there are 450 members now.

(a) How many female members are there now?

(b) What percentage of the members are females now?

 Solution:

            The female members had reduced 0.25 i.e. reduced by ¼ in fraction

            Draw the math model based on the before and after the reduction,

            Define M as 1 unit of Male and F as 1 unit of female

                           2M + 4F = 700

                           M + 3F = 450 ==> 2M + 6F = 900

                           2F = 200

                           F = 100

                           Female members now = 3 × 100 = 300

            The percentage of the members are female now = 300/450 × 100% = 66 2/3%
