Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ121

In the figure below not drawn to scale, 2/11 of X overlaps with 1/4 of Y. Express the ratio of the unshaded area of X to the unshaded area of Y in its simplest form.

Solution:

                          2/11 of X overlaps with 1/4 of Y

                          2/11 of X equivalent to 1/4 = 2/8 of Y

                          So in ratio, X : Y : Shaded = 11 : 8 : 2

                          X unshaded : Y unshaded = 9 : 6 = 3 : 2
