Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ78

ABCD is a parallelogram. ADE is a straight line and DC = DE. Find ∠ x and ∠ y.

Solution:

                   ABCD is a parallelogram,

                              ∠ CDE = ∠ BAD = 780

DC = DE, CDE form a isosceles triangle,

                              ∠ CED = ∠ ECD = (1800 – 780) ÷ 2 = 510

                   ADE is a straight line,

                              ∠ x = 1800 – 510 = 1290

                   ABD is a triangle,

                              ∠ ABD + ∠ ADB = 1800 – 780 = 1020

                   ADE is a straight line,

                              ∠ ADF = 1800 – 1500 = 300

                   BFD is a triangle,

                              ∠ y = 1800 – (∠ ABD + ∠ ADB) – ∠ ADF – 360

                               = 1800 – 1020 – 300 – 360 = 120
