Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ34

Hairu had 7 times as many stickers as Sarin. Then Hairu gave 1/5 of his stickers to Sarin. Then Sarin gave his back 1/6 of the stickers that he had. If Hairu had 80 more stickers than Sarin at the end, how many stickers did Hairu had at first?

Solution:

Math model:

Hairu gave away 1/5 means left with 4/5, which is left with 7 × 4 = 28 units.

Hairu received another 2 units from Sarin (1/6 of Sarin had), he had = 30 units

Per the model,

1 unit = 80 ÷ 20 = 4 stickers

Hairu had 35 × 4 = 140 stickers at first

Alternative solution:

Finally, Hairu had 80 stickers more than Sarin,

Imply that 30 – 10 = 20 units = 80,

1 unit = 4 stickers

Hairu had 35 × 4 = 140 stickers at first
