Upper primary school mathematics question UPQ8

Hairu and Fatimah have a total of 328 marbles. Sarin and Hairu have 176 marbles altogether. Fatimah has 5 times as many marbles as Sarin. How many marbles does each of them have?

Solution:

Assume Sarin have 1 unit of marbles

4 units = 328 – 176 = 152

1 unit = 152÷4 = 38 (Sarin)

5 units = 5×38 = 190 (Fatimah)

176 – 38 = 138 (Hairu)

Alternate solution:

F = 5S ——- (1)

H + S = 176 — (2)** →** S = 176 – H

H + F = 328 — (3)

From (3) & (1), H + 5S = 328

H + 5(176 – H) = 328

4H = 880 – 328

H = 138

F = 190

S = 38
